QUEEN CHARLOTTE STREET LEITH, EDINBURGH
This Gregor Homes’ Development is undoubtedly one of the most unusual the firm have tackled. Formerly, a school ( St Mary’s Leith) and more recently a Church Hall (n St Mary’s Star of the Sea), the original building was Listed. As such, it was restricting in its potential when looking at conversion into apartments. However, the architects devised an ambitious scheme involving the conversion of existing building but adding a “new-build” extension that would afford the creation of what is now “St Mary’s Lofts”.
There are 14 apartments on four main floors; the first & second floors feature the original “double height” ceilings giving a marvellous feeling of space (indeed some of the “space” has been turned into extensive storage places); the ground floor flats are “cozy” and the top flats are small (ish) penthouses with roof terraces.
The development has private allocated parking (included in the price) and each flat has all “mod cons”.
Leith’s busting Shore area is literally on the doorstep to St Mary’s Lofts where of course all the area’s Bars, Bistros & restaurants are to be found. The city centre is only a ten minute bus ride.
